The way we use and access the internet is changing and by 2015 more people will be browsing the internet using a mobile device than on PC or laptop! Last year Google published a study about smartphone users and the results speak for themselves.
- 75% of people prefer a mobile-friendly site
- 67% of mobile users say that when they visit a mobile-friendly site, they’re more likely to buy a site’s product or service
- 48% of users say they feel frustrated and annoyed when they get to a site that’s not mobile-friendly
What is Responsive Web Design?
Technology has advanced very quickly in the past few years and smartphones have become the ultimate must-have gadget of the 2010’s. Nearly 60% of the UK own a smartphones and they are not the only mobile device that has proven to be popular. We saw a huge increase in the amount of tablets been sold and for the first time ever, the sale of desktop computers diminished compared to previous years. Today there are thousands of different devices which are a wide range of different shapes and sizes so how do we ensure a website looks and functions properly on every one?
We could create a different version of a website which targets each device but this would be costly and is not a very practical solution. This is where responsive web design comes in, a site using responsive techniques will adapt to the layout depending on the screen resolution of the device been used. This means that you only have to build one website as it will react and work effortlessly whether you are browsing on a PC, laptop, mobile or tablet.
But what does this mean for SEO?
Google believe having a mobile friendly website is just as important as we do and they state that websites optimised for mobiles will rank higher in mobile searches. They have also released recommendations on how to build them and they strongly suggest that the best technique is responsive design. This means the user will only have to build one version of their website which makes much more sense when doing SEO!
